Bundesliga side Hannover 96 are interested in signing Sunderland centre back Papy Djilobodji in the coming days.

According to Kicker, the 29-year-old defender is one of a few transfer targets for the German first division side.

Djilobodji made one appearance for the Black Cats last season in all competitions, as he spent the majority of the season on loan at Ligue 1 side Dijon, and is believed to be on the list of players new Sunderland head coach Jack Ross is looking to off load.

The Senegalese international has played a total of 22 matches for the Black Cats since signing from Chelsea in 2016.

The centre half is joined by West Ham United’s Reece Oxford and Southampton’s Jan Bednarek as potential transfer targets for Andre Breitenreiter’s side.

Hannover 96 lost their star defender Salif Sane to Schalke earlier in this summer’s transfer window, and will be looking to replace him in the coming weeks.

The Verdict

Papy Djilobodji never quite got up to speed in the red and white of Sunderland throughout his two years at the Stadium of Light.

With just 22 appearances to his name, cashing in on the Senegalese defender could be good business for Jack Ross, as the new Black Cats head coach descends on a very important season.

Djilobodji still has potential to be an important player in any defensive line, but it does appear that his time at Sunderland has come to an end, with Hannover 96 the most likely new home.
