Sunderland defender Glenn Loovens completed 90 minutes of his comeback against Morecambe in the Checkatrade Trophy this week, but was quick to heap praise on one of his team mates.

The former Sheffield Wednesday defender has been out of action since the end of September, but he slotted back in perfectly as the Black Cats won their eighth game in a row against Jim Bentley's side.

A last minute goal from Josh Maja was the difference and the 19-year-old was the subject of praise from Loovens.

“He’s spectacular,” Loovens told the Sunderland Echo. “You have to wait once a week, we see it every day in training."

“I know exactly what he can do and he proved it again tonight.”

Maja has been in sensational form for Jack Ross' side, with his winner on Tuesday taking him into double figures for the season. His goal ensured that they've qualified for the next round of the competition, which is drawn later today.

The Black Cats are now unbeaten in 11 matches in all competitions as they hunt an immediate return to the Championship.

The Verdict

Maja has seized his chance this season. He's only started 20 league games in his entire career, but his goal scoring prowess is beginning to reveal itself.

He could well be hot property in the transfer window, he's young, energetic and seemingly with an impressive future ahead of him.

Glenn Loovens has played with enough players over the years to spot a good one.
