It’s been a dismal start to the season for Sunderland and Simon Grayson, with the Wearside club sitting 23rd in the Championship.
Unfortunately, it’s a familiar feeling for Black Cats fans who had suffered several years of underperforming and bad results in the Premier League.
Grayson’s men are currently on a nine-game winless run although they stopped successive defeats with a good point at Preston on Saturday.
Whilst they’re not exactly scoring for fun, the problems for Sunderland are clear to see.
They are the only team in the Championship who have yet to keep a clean sheet and have conceded nine goals in their past three matches.
Full-back Billy Jones has featured regularly this season and revealed the unwanted stat is of a big concern to him.
“It’s a big frustration for me as a defender but I think for all of us. You very much take it personally as the back five,” he told the Chronicle Live.
However, he correctly pointed out that it’s down to more than just the defensive individuals to keep the ball out.
“All the lads talk as a group about defending as a team, defending from the front and getting closer to people in certain areas.”
Sunderland have once again let their loyal fan base down who continue to show up in big numbers.
Defensively, they remain extremely suspect and it’s something Grayson has to address, be it changes in personnel or a formation, even if the options are limited.
The comments from Billy Jones are honest and correct, but fans need to see changes on the pitch instead of words in the press.
