Sunderland player edging closer to transfer away from the Stadium of Light

Young Sunderland player Sam Greenwood is close to leaving the Black Cats.

According to HITC, the 16-year-old will be joining Stuttgart this season.

The German side finished in seventh place in their first season back in the top division, but narrowly missed out on playing in Europe because Eintracht Frankfurt beat Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal Final to gain the last place.

Greenwood was playing with the Sunderland Under-18s due to his above average ability, but that didn’t seem faze him because he scored five goals and provided six assists in the U18 Premier League.

He will be hoping to replicate the success of other English players in Germany over recent seasons such as Jadon Sancho, Reece Oxford and Ademola Lookman.

The Verdict

This will obviously be a disappointment for Sunderland, but it’s a great move for the youngster.

The Bundesliga is a hotbed of young talent with plenty of first-team opportunities in the top division. It’s more of a case of if they are good enough to play rather than how old they are, so this is an ideal move for the stage of his career that he is at.

Stuttgart in particular have shown a willingness to invest in young players because Benjamin Pavard, Pablo Maffeo and Santiago Ascacibar are just some of the young talents they have signed in recent seasons.
