Niall Huggins is currently having a medical at Sunderland ahead of a move from Leeds United, according to Football Insider.

Huggins has been on Leeds' books from an early age, and looks set to leave Elland Road after a lengthy association with the club.

The 20-year-old was a forward for the Under-18s' but was then converted into a left-back, and has since been a regular for the Under-23s'.

He has made only one first-team appearance for the Whites, making his debut in a 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in February, replacing Gjanni Alioski for the final 37 minutes.

But after signing a new deal at Elland Road until 2023 in December, Leeds have given Huggins the green light to leave the club.

After agreeing terms with Sunderland, the versatile full-back is now having a medical at Sunderland this morning ahead of a move to the Stadium of Light.

Huggins looks set to become the Black Cats' seventh summer signing, after the club signed Fred Alves and Nathan Broadhead on loan from West Ham and Everton this week respectively.

The Verdict

This is a good move for Huggins.

Even though Marcelo Bielsa likes to work with a small squad at Elland Road, and a number of youngsters get their chance, regular game time won't be on the cards for Huggins in West Yorkshire.

Sunderland are fighting for promotion in a really competitive League One division, and it should be an excellent experience for him as he looks to continue his development elsewhere.
