Fabio Borini has made it clear he would be open to a return to Sunderland this summer, although it's unclear whether they will pursue a move for the attacker.

The 31-year-old is currently playing in Turkey with Fatih Karagumuruk but he has entered the final year of his contract with the club and it appears he could be allowed to move on during the current window.

And, reporter Mark Douglas has revealed that Borini is keen on returning to Sunderland, with representatives of the player having reached out to the Black Cats over a potential deal.

The Italian made over 90 appearances for the Wearside outfit, initially on loan before making the move permanent in 2015, and he would score 17 goals during that period before securing a dream move to Milan.

During his time at the Stadium of Light, Borini was a popular figure and he appears to have a real love for the club given his desire to come back.

Alex Neil is expected to be busy in the coming weeks as he looks to strengthen his squad following their return to the Championship.

The verdict

This is certainly a potential signing that Sunderland should consider because Borini has a lot of top level experience and can play in various attacking positions, which would appeal to Neil.

Of course, you should never sign someone just because they like the club but it is a benefit and it's something that the player wants.

So, it makes sense financially it may be something that Sunderland look at as they do need attacking reinforcements during this window.
