According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (15/01, 19:43), Middlesbrough’s Ashley Fletcher is in-demand this month, with up to three Sky Bet Championship clubs looking to take the striker on-loan.
Sunderland, Norwich City and Barnsley are all keen to offer the striker a temporary move out of the Riverside Stadium, just six months after he arrived from West Ham United.
Garry Monk was the man to take Fletcher to the Riverside, but the young striker has found his opportunities limited at Boro under both Monk and now Tony Pulis.
The 22-year-old cost Middlesbrough £6.5m to sign during the summer, but has struggled for regular starts for the Teessiders, repaying his fee with just two goals across all competitions so far this season.
Sunderland and Norwich are keen, whilst Barnsley could swoop to secure Fletcher’s service on-loan for a second time in his short career.
Fletcher previously spent time on-loan with Barnsley during the 2015/16 campaign, where his 26 appearances for the Tykes brought nine goals and six assists, with the striker key to the club’s promotion from League One to the Championship.
Things have not really worked out for Fletcher at the Riverside Stadium so far, and a change in management midway through the season will not have helped.
However, there is still a very good Championship striker in Fletcher, who given a regular run of games, has the potential to deliver.
A move seems best this month, as game-time with Boro is looking unlikely – particularly with the likes of Britt Assombalonga, Rudy Gestede and Martin Braithwaite ahead of him in the pecking order.
