Sunderland's relegation to League One was confirmed as they lost a dramatic game to rivals Burton Albion 2-1 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Late goals for the visitors, including one from former player Darren Bent, sealed the Black Cats fate, although many fans will have accepted a second successive relegation was on the cards for the past few weeks.

There have been many, many problems with Sunderland on the pitch this season but the goalkeeping situation is easily the worst.

Three stoppers have been given a chance at one stage or another this season and all have been very poor.

Hull's David Marshall, who is currently second choice for the Tigers, would be an experienced and quality option that would solve the major issue for the Black Cats.

The attacking midfielder is on-loan at Blackburn from Huddersfield but may not stay with Rovers next season.

He has a quality left-foot, is determined to prove himself and very capable in League One.

Sunderland need a lot of creativity to be added to their squad and Payne would be a great start.

Going for proven League One performers seems an obvious way to bouncing back immediately, and many will jump at the chance to play for a club the size of Sunderland.

One is Charlie Wyke, who could be the ideal focal point for the Wearside outfit.

He scores goals at this level and allows others to play off him. He would be a solid signing for next season.
