It’s going to be a tough couple of weeks for Sunderland in the Sky Bet Championship, with it looking likely that Chris Coleman’s side will be relegated.

It has been a tough year for the Black Cats back in the Championship, but barring a miracle in the coming weeks, it looks likely that they will suffer a second successive relegation and fall into League One ahead of the summer.

Whatever division Sunderland find themselves in next season, Coleman faces a big summer, rebuilding a squad that is sure to be ripped apart once again.

Additions will be needed in the summer, with quality something that has to be targeted, particularly if Sunderland find themselves looking for an instant return if they are relegated to League One.

With that in mind, we take a look at some players that Sunderland should be taking a look at, identifying FOUR they need to be keeping a watchful eye on…

We might not see Lonergan feature again for Leeds United this season, but Sunderland have previously shown an interest in the goalkeeper.

Lonergan has plenty of experience and could well be on his way out of Elland Road in the summer.

Sunderland will want to know if it is worth them making another move.

At the other end of the table, Sunderland will need to add bodies, as goals have been a problem since Lewis Grabban departed.

Nuhiu has been terrific for Sheffield Wednesday during the second-half of the season, and with doubt still surrounding his future, Sunderland might be tempted to swoop and offer the forward a leading role at the Stadium of Light.

Grant has once again spent the year away from Nottingham Forest with Notts County in League Two, where once again, he has impressed.

It remains to be seen if a chance comes for Grant with Forest next season, but if it doesn’t, he is certainly a player Sunderland could benefit from having around, particularly if they are in League One.

Sunderland have a very young squad by the Championship’s standards, which will need added experience next season.

Shackell is an experienced defender that could be available in the summer.

Taking him on ahead of next season could be a shrewd move from Coleman.
