Sunderland have entered advanced negotiations with Lyle Taylor as they look to get this deal over the line, according to The Sunderland Echo via the Sky Sports News Live Transfer Blog [Sunday 24th June, 19:48].

Taylor is a man in demand this summer as he is expected to leave AFC Wimbledon when his contract expires at the end of this month.

The 28-year-old is wanted by a host of League One clubs, who have been alerted to the prolific striker's availability.

Bristol Rovers, Peterborough United and Southend United are among the other sides in League One to be after Taylor, while Championship duo Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic have been linked.

Taylor hit 18 goals last season to further add to his burgeoning reputation that he has earned while at AFC Wimbledon.

The Montserrat international has hit 44 goals in the Football League for the Dons, making him their top scorer ever in the professional leagues.

But Wimbledon are set to lose the former Sheffield United and Scunthorpe United forward with Sunderland edging closer after entering advanced talks.

The Verdict

Taylor is a top striker at League One level and he is exactly what Sunderland need.

With a proven track record of scoring goals for Wimbledon - who were down towards the bottom of the division for much of the year - he would be an ideal capture of a promotion hopeful.

With the service provided by some of Sunderland's creative midfielders, there is no reason why Taylor should not be hitting 20 goals in the league for the Black Cats and earning them promotion to the Championship.

On a free, this could just be one of the deals of the summer, especially if his goals fire them back to the second tier.
