Hibernian have announced that they have signed John Potter as their assistant manager from League One side Sunderland.

The move will see Potter link up with former Sunderland boss Jack Ross once again, after the former St Mirren boss was sacked as their manager earlier this season.

The Black Cats have struggled for much of this year's campaign, and newly-appointed boss Phil Parkinson hasn't fared much better since taking charge at the Stadium of Light.

The 51-year-old has just two wins to his name, and will be keen to find some consistency in their performances as the season progresses.

He'll now be keen to find a replacement for Potter, who'll be looking to get off to a positive start at Hibernian with Ross when they take on Motherwell on Saturday.

It had previously been revealed by Phil Parkinson in a pre-match press conference ahead of their FA Cup First Round Replay against Gillingham that there had been contact made from Hibernian to try and sign Potter.

"There has been contact between Hibs and Sunderland about John Potter. There is the obvious lure of going back to Scotland for John and if he does go, we will wish him all the best."

Sunderland will be hoping that Potter's departure doesn't have too much of an impact on their preparations ahead of their game against Gillingham tonight, where they'll be looking to pick up a much-needed win to progress to the next round of the competition.

The Verdict:

I'm not surprised by this at all.

Parkinson all but confirmed that Potter was on his way back up to Scotland, and it will have been a no-brainer for the coach who has previously worked alongside Jack Ross.

I think Ross will do an excellent job with Hibernian this season, and it's important that Parkinson finds a suitable replacement to fill the void left by Potter heading into the festive period.
