Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has told in-demand pair Didier N’Dong and Lamine Kone that they can leave in January, if their performances continue to attract interest from other sides.

In an interview with The Sunderland Echo, the former Preston manager admitted that the club would consider offers for the players in the next transfer window.

The African pair have become integral to the first team since signing for the club last summer, but Grayson will not stand in their way if the right offer comes in.

“Speaking to them before the start of the season, I just keep telling them to play well because before deadline day, if players are playing well, other clubs are going to show interest and be attracted to these players,” he said.

“They’ve done well but if they want to leave the club in January their performances will decide that.”

Sunderland welcome Sheffield United to The Stadium of Light this afternoon, but the pair may start from the bench, having endured a gruelling travel schedule whilst representing Gabon and the Ivory Coast in

African World Cup qualifying.

The Verdict: Fans will be delighted to have kept the pair beyond the summer window, but may feel disappointed that Grayson has admitted they could depart in January.

Relegation from the Premier League was a long time coming for the club, but players of Kone and N’Dong’s quality will be required if Sunderland are to get anywhere near the top six this season.

Kone is a rock at the back, and impressed last season in the Premier League, and N’Dong’s presence in the heart of the midfield has made the pair key components of the core of the team, and it is hoped that they will see out the entire season at The Stadium of Light.

Sunderland fans, are you disappointed by Grayson's admission that he could allow the duo to leave in January?
