Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell is hoping to reinvent himself and rescue his career by switching to centre back under manager Simon Grayson, reports the Mirror.

The former Everton and Manchester City man has flattered to deceive thus far in his career, but after talks with manager Grayson, he is hoping a move to central defence will give him a new lease of life and allow him to rescue his career.

Rodwell was touted as one of the finest prospects in English football when Manchester City splashed over £25m to take him to the Etihad less than five years ago. However, his career has somewhat nosedived since, and his current situation with Sunderland is one of frustration as the club struggles to adapt to the Championship.

Grayson comments in the report that he has spoken to Rodwell, who has informed him of his history of playing centre-back during his time as a young player with Everton, while Grayson admitted he had asked Rodwell to get back to the fitness and commitment levels needed to succeed.

Sunderland drew 1-1 with QPR yesterday to continue their winless run at home in 2017, and Grayson will be hoping improvement from Rodwell can help drive the club to results for the rest of the season.

Sunderland fans, what do you think to Rodwell? Does he make a better defender? Let us know in the comments!
