Sunderland man issues inspirational message after Bristol City comeback

Sunderland finally showed some signs of life, coming from three goals behind to snatch a dramatic late 3-3 draw against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon.

Two own goals, from Josh Brownhill and Marlon Pack, either side of an Aiden McGeady strike grabbed a point from a match where a thrashing looked likely at half time.

However, as Chris Coleman’s side still find themselves three points adrift of Championship safety, more work is still required and that has not been lost on young midfielder George Honeyman.

It is promising that Sunderland are capable of coming together and fighting for the cause but they will have to do that in every game from now until the end of the season if they are to avoid the embarrassment of a second straight relegation.

Honeyman knows that as much as anyone and he told the club’s official website: “We have the quality, we need to build on this and see where it takes us. There felt a real togetherness and we need to carry on with it.

“The fans at the end too, that gave everyone a lift. This is something we really need to build on from now, let’s not waste the result.

“We have a massive couple of weeks coming up and we have to go into it on a high after Bristol, go into Saturday confident of getting the three points if we play like we did second half.

“I don’t know why it is we started so bad, whether it is nervous energy around the place, but at least we showed the character to come back.

The Verdict

Honeyman is spot on. Saturday’s comeback was sensational and a long overdue sign that this Sunderland side will fight for each other but at the end of the day, it gained them one point.

They need more than that if they are to clamber out of trouble and that’s why the comeback has to be a catalyst for stringing together a run of results and building momentum. That’s the only way they can escape.
