To say that Phil Parkinson's first game as manager of Sunderland didn't exactly go to plan, is probably something of an understatement.

Travelling to one of the early season pacesetters in League One in the shape of Wycombe Wanderers, the Black Cats were unable to make any sort of statement of their own, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat thanks to Darius Charles' first-half header, with Parkinson's new side struggling to find a response of their own.

But while that performance and failure to throw down any sort of marker is likely to be the most immediate concern for Sunderland, that defeat at Adams Park has also left them with another, worrying issue to address.

With less than ten minutes remaining in the game, Aiden McGeady was shown a yellow card for a heavy challenge on Kevin Grimmer. That booking was McGeady's fifth in the league this season, earning him a one-match suspension, keeping him out of the clash with Tranmere Rovers at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.

Considering the attacking threat and all-round ability that McGeady provides for Sunderland, that is going to be a big miss for the Black Cats as they go in search of a much-needed win to kick-start Parkinson's time in charge of the club.

It is however, also a big opportunity for another member of Sunderland's squad to step forward and prove their own worth to Parkinson, as he identifies his best XI going forward.

One such player who will surely be determined to take that opportunity, is fellow attacking midfielder, Lynden Gooch.

Having been an ever-present in Sunderland's starting lineups in the league this season under the now-departed Jack Ross, Gooch was one of those who somewhat unexpectedly found himself dropped to the bench by Parkinson for the trip to Adams Park.

That is something that, had Sunderland taken all three points on Saturday, could have been a concern for Gooch, since it may have been difficult to break back into a side that had just got their new manager off to a winning start against one of the early season promotion contenders.

As it is however, Gooch will be hopeful that McGeady's suspension for the Tranmere game, means that he is given the call to step up, and that he will then be able to take his chance to secure himself a place on Parkinson's teamsheet going forward.

With the new manager seemingly willing to give every player at the club a chance to earn their place in the side, Gooch will know that the pressure is on him to make that positive impact, so that it is difficult for Parkinson to justify leaving him out of the side again.

Having already scored three league goals this season - just two fewer than he recorded in the entirety of the previous campaign - Gooch may well be confident of doing that, particularly against a Tranmere side who have yet to really get going at this level, meaning that in some senses, the fixture list has potentially fallen favourably for him here.

Football is one of those things where one man's loss is another's gain, and it appears as though now, Gooch has the opportunity to benefit from McGeady's mistake, and make sure that he is not someone who can be left behind in the new Phil Parkinson era at the Stadium of Light.
