Sunderland midfielder Dylan McGeouch could leave the club on a free transfer this summer with his deal at the Stadium of Light coming to an end.

The 26-year-old joined the Black Cats from Hibs at the start of the season and his arrival was considered a real coup after his performances in Edinburgh.

At the time, the length of his deal on Wearside wasn't revealed but Chronicle Live have confirmed that he is out of contract in the coming weeks after only penning an initial one-year option.

Therefore, they reveal that McGeouch could be off after enduring what was a very frustrating campaign that saw him make just 22 appearances for Jack Ross' side in the league.

He particularly fell out of favour in 2019, featuring in just five games since mid-January.

That means a move may appeal to the former Celtic man who recently told Scottish media that he will have to make a 'big decision' in the coming months and that he was disappointed not to have featured more often during the run-in for Sunderland.

McGeouch failed to make the matchday squad in any of the recent play-off games.

The Verdict

This looked like a great deal for Sunderland at the time because the midfielder was outstanding for Hibs, however it just hasn't worked out for whatever reason.

You would imagine he is on a decent wage at the club, so it may make sense for all parties if he does leave in the summer.

It's a shame for McGeouch that the move hasn't gone as he hoped and some fans will feel he deserved more of a chance but these things happen in football.
