One Sunderland player will be waking up with a huge smile on his face after committing his future to the club.
The club’s official website confirmed on Tuesday that Luke O’Nien has penned a new contract which would see him extend his stay at the Stadium Of Light until the summer of 2024.
O’Nien moved to to Wearside in the summer of 2018 and has since established himself as a vital part of the first team squad, making 139 appearances in three years.
At 26 years of age the versatile midfielder is entering his prime, and speaking to the website, Lee Johnson expressed his delight at tying down one of the club’s most invaluable players.
He said: ““We are all delighted that Luke that has re-signed for the club.
“He is a great character around the place and he’s perfect for the type of culture that we want to create, as well as being a very versatile and quality player – and one we hope can help us strive for the next level.”
O’Nien’s relationship with the supporters has been a big part of his success with Sunderland and took to social media to express his gratitude for the chance to continue what he’s started at the Stadium Of Light.

How well do you know Sunderland’s celebrity supporters? – Can you score 20/20?
This is great news for the season ahead.
Sunderland are at something of a crossroads at the moment and the pressure is on Lee Johnson and the recruitment team at the Stadium Of Light to build a team that’s filled with the right players and characters.
Luke O’Nien certainly fits the bill on both of those fronts.
If the Black Cats are to secure promotion this term then O’Nien’s leadership and versatility will be absolutely vital and the fact that he’s penned a three-year deal can only be good news.
