Sunderland midfielder Didier Ndong has been told he has no future at the Stadium of Light despite arriving back at the North East, according to reports from Sky Sports.

The club's record signing, who arrived from French side Lorient for a fee of £13.6million in 2016, hasn't made an appearance for the Black Cats since he was sent off against Cardiff City in January.

The Gabon international was pictured at Newcastle Airport on Saturday, and Sunderland have been advised he is on Tyneside somewhere but are not expecting him back at training.

Ndong had failed to show for pre-season after a £7m transfer to Torino fell through after he failed to agree personal terms, and had been quoted in a Gabon news outlet over the weekend saying he would take a pay cut to play again this season for Sunderland.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross has recently said: "There has been no contact with me - in terms of me having him back in the playing squad, we have gone a long way beyond that point, I think".

The North East side are enjoying life in League One, having won five out of their opening nine league outings, and sit 3rd in the League One table behind Peterborough United and Portsmouth.

The Verdict

This is hardly surprising - Ndong has missed his chance to make things right at Sunderland having missed pre-season training, and seems to crawling back to the club with his tail between his legs after a move away from the Stadium of Light never materialised.
