Sunderland have made contact with Sheffield United asking for Ched Evans to be recalled from his loan spell with Fleetwood Town, as the League One side look to secure the striker’s service.

Jack Ross is on the lookout for a striker to bolster his options at the Stadium of Light, after Sunderland watched Josh Maja turn his back on the club earlier in the transfer window.

Now, according to Andy Giddings at BBC Sheffield, the Black Cats have been in contact with Sheffield United, asking the Yorkshire outfit to recall Evans from his loan spell with Fleetwood, as they plot their own move for the player.

Evans endured a disappointing return to Bramall Lane last season, failing to score in nine Championship appearances for the Blades.

However, the 30-year-old has been showing his clinical side whilst with Fleetwood on loan, scoring 12 goals in all competitions for Joey Barton’s side, 11 of which have come in League One.

The form of the Welsh striker has seen Fleetwood consolidate in mid-table this season, with the Cod Army still having an outside chance of play-off football.

Sunderland, on the other hand, have automatic promotion in their sights after a strong start to life under Ross.

The Verdict

It’s clear that Sunderland’s search for Maja’s replacement is taking them down a number of routes, but you’ve got to say that Evans would be a good option.

Controversy has meant it hasn’t been easy for Evans, but he’s been showing at Fleetwood how clinical he can be in League One.

He’s scoring goals for Fleetwood and, in a better side, you’d imagine he will continue to do so.

It could be a great option for Ross.
