Sunderland have made an enquiry to Burnley about bringing forward Jonathan Walters to the Stadium of Light this month, according to Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The Ireland international has had a tough season and missed a large chunk through injury. However, he has returned in recent weeks and now Chris Coleman wants to sign the ex-Stoke man to help his struggling side, according to Alan Nixon.

During his absence, the Clarets excelled and have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season which will make it hard for Walters to win a place in the team. As well as that, Sean Dyche may have some attacking players in mind to bring to Turf Moor in the window.

Therefore, a move to Sunderland and regular football could appeal to the 34-year old.

Given the financial situation of the Wearside club, it's no surprise to see that Nixon suggests a move to Sunderland would initially be on a temporary basis with a view to making it permanent in the summer.

Walters played over 140 games in the Championship for Ipswich Town between 2006-10 before moving to Premier League Stoke City.

The Verdict

What a good signing this would be for Sunderland. Jon Walters is exactly the type of player you would want when you are battling relegation.

As well as bringing goals and physicality to the side, Walters has a great work ethic and the right mentality to help struggling Sunderland.

All Black Cats fans should hope this deal comes off, although if he is available you can expect a lot of competition for his signature which may make the signing tough.
