According to a report in the Daily Mail, Sunderland find themselves ahead of a host of clubs in the race to sign Hakeeb Adelakun from Scunthorpe United when the transfer window opens next month.

Adelakun’s contract with Scunthorpe is set to expire in the summer, and whilst the Sky Bet League One outfit are entitled to compensation should he leave, they are looking to recoup £1m in January.

The 21-year-old has been in extremely impressive form for the Irons so far this season, with the midfielder scoring two goals and assisting a further nine in his 20 League One appearances, helping Graham Alexander’s side into promotion contention, once again.

Scunthorpe currently sit fourth in the League One table, with Adelakun’s form attracting the interest of Chris Coleman, amongst others, as he looks to bolster his Sunderland squad in early 2018.

Sunderland, who are facing a relegation battle in the Championship, lead the race to sign Adelakun, but Barnsley and Hull City are also interested in striking a deal for the Scunthorpe ace.

Premier League outfit, Crystal Palace, have also shown an interest in Adelakun, who began his career with the Eagles’ academy before establishing himself with Scunthorpe’s first-team over recent years.

The Verdict

It is very little surprise to hear of interest in Adelakun, who so far this season has been extremely impressive for Scunthorpe in League One, with his creativity a standout.

Sunderland need additions in January, and any deal they could strike with Scunthorpe would have to be seen as a positive for the Stadium of Light outfit.

Coleman’s squad is reliant on Lewis Grabban’s goalscoring exploits, but with his future up in the air, there is definitely room for attacking additions to be made.
