Sunderland have reportedly increased their bid for Bradford City striker Charlie Wyke to £1million, according to the Northern Echo

The bid is thought to be much closer to the fee what the Bantams would be willing to sell for with Wyke entering the last year of his contract and refusing to sign a new deal.

The Black Cats had an initial offer of £600,000 for the 25-year-old knocked back by Bradford City, but with Jack Ross missing out on Cheltenham Town's Mo Eisa their bid for Wyke has been increased.

Ross is keen to add more firepower to a squad that really struggled for goals in the Championship last season.

Having recently sold young striker Joel Asoro to Swansea City for £2million the need for an attacker has intensified significantly.

Wyke would become Ross's eighth signing of the summer as he looks to shape a team that can bounce straight back to the Championship.

Dylan McGeuoch, Jon McLaughlin, Glen Loovens, Alim Ozturk, Chris Maguire, Tom Flanagan and Reece James have all come in so far.

The verdict

Whilst Wyke has proven himself to be a good striker at League One level, £1million seems like an awful lot for a player entering the last year of his contract.

Nonetheless, the Sunderland missing out on other targets, securing Wyke's signature is looking more and more important by the day, so it could well be worth paying.
