Sunderland are reportedly keen to make Aiden McGeady's loan move to Charlton Athletic a permanent one according to the Northern Echo.

McGeady signed for Lee Bowyer's side on Deadline Day, and was an unused substitute in his first game for the Addicks in a narrow win over relegation-threatened Barnsley at The Valley.

The Irishman fell out of favour at the Stadium of Light, with an off-the-field issue being highlighted as one of the reasons as to why the Black Cats were keen to cut ties with the experienced winger.

Sunderland are currently sat eighth in the League One table, and will be hoping they can win promotion back into the Championship this season.

McGeady enjoyed a hugely successful season with the Black Cats last season, as they were beaten in the League One Play-Off Final by Charlton.

The 33-year-old finished that campaign with 14 goals and six assists to his name in all competitions, but was ultimately left frustrated as they were forced to settle for yet another season in League One.

The report from the Northern Echo revealed that Charlton are paying half of McGeady's wages in this loan spell, and Sunderland are keen to discuss a permanent switch to the Addicks for the Irishman.

The Verdict:

I'm not surprised to see that Sunderland are pushing for a permanent exit for McGeady.

They clearly aren't happy with him, and are keen to see him depart the club on a permanent basis at the earliest of opportunities.

A move to Charlton permanently will depend on whether he can impress Lee Bowyer over the next few months though, and if he can do that, then I'm sure the Addicks boss will be keen to make his loan move a permanent switch at the end of this year's campaign.

McGeady's time at Sunderland looks as though it is all but done as we head into the second-half of the 2019/20 season.
