League One side Sunderland are reportedly interested in taking misfit Ross McCormack on a short-term loan deal, according to the Daily Record.

The 32-year-old came through the Rangers youth set-up and his former charges are also interested in taking him to Ibrox, but Jack Ross is hoping to hijack the move, albeit on a short-term loan deal, as he looks to add to his side's firepower in League One.

McCormack, who was famously involved in a bust-up with boss Steve Bruce, has most recently been playing for Australian side Melbourne City and has no future at Villa Park. He scored 14 goals in 17 A-League matches, but returned in the summer to look for new employers in the UK.

He joined Bruce's side from Fulham for the huge fee in 2016, but fell quickly out of favour when Roberto Di Matteo was replaced by the former Manchester United defender.

McCormack, who has also played for Cardiff City, Leeds United and Motherwell, has 13 international caps to his name and two goals.

The Verdict

There's still a decent player in Ross McCormack, not a top-six Championship player, but definitely one who could thrive in Scotland or League One.

There's no disrespect intended there to the Scottish Premier League, but outside the top two or three the standard is such that McCormack could grab a few goals.

It's best all round that he moves on, too, things simply haven't worked out at Villa and the longer he stays, the worse his legacy becomes.
