Swansea City manager Steve Cooper has revealed that the reported interest from Sunderland for left-back Declan John is genuine, and they have made an enquiry.

Phil Parkinson has been very active in this transfer window as he looks to revitalise his Sunderland squad to consolidate their place in the League One play-offs this season, and potentially put pressure on the top two.

Having already brought in Kyle Lafferty, Bailey Wright, and Josh Scowen, it would appear that Parkinson is not done with his January business at the Stadium of Light.

It was reported that Sunderland were interested in taking Swansea City left-back Declan John in on-loan for the remainder of the season. Parkinson had this to say to the Northern Echo on their reported interest and pursuit of the Wales international: “He’s someone we have inquired about.

“He’s similar to Denver in terms of his pace and being a real outlet on that side. He’s someone we’ve asked about.”

Sunderland’s interest appears genuine with Parkinson confirming the interest from the Wearside end, however, Steve Cooper has since confirmed from the South Wales end that their interest in real and a move could materialise before the transfer window shuts tomorrow night.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Potter commented on the potential outgoing. He said (as quoted by Wales Online): “We’re aware of that. That’s one of the things that might happen but at the moment we aren’t going through that process. I can confirm that rumour as being true, but i don’t think it’s gone much further than that yet.”

John has made just three senior appearances this season for Cooper’s side with three coming in the League Cup.

Can you name the season in which these Sunderland images were taken?

The verdict

This would be a wise move for all parties to shift John out on-loan for the rest of the season as he won’t be getting regular playing time at the Liberty any time soon.

John has only played once in the league this season and at Sunderland, he will provide great competition for Denver Hume and bolster Phil Parkinson’s defence ahead of a push for promotion in the back end of the season.

The Black Cats have conducted solid business this month and could be making another shrewd addition with John, as he has shown real potential in his career at Cardiff, Swansea, and Rangers.

Sunderland currently sit in fifth place after their win last night and Parkinson is keen to keep up their strong momentum to hopefully push for promotion at the Stadium of Light, which would certainly appeal to John.
