Sunderland have been dealt a frustrating injury blow, with the news that Lynden Gooch has suffered a broken foot according to Roker Report.

The report revealed that the American international could be ruled out for up to eight weeks with the injury, depending on whether it requires surgery.

Gooch has been a regular in the Sunderland team, and has been a versatile member of the squad this term in particular, having played in a number of different positions for the club.

He has made 14 appearances in total this term, with Sunderland currently sat eighth in the League One table after their opening 12 matches of this year's league campaign.

He'll leave a sizeable void in the starting XI, and it'll be interesting to see which players is to replace him heading towards the hectic festive period, which could make or break their season.

Phil Parkinson's side can't afford to drop many more points in and around the Christmas period, as they're already eight points adrift of league-leaders Hull City, with the pressure seemingly growing on the Sunderland boss from the Stadium of Light faithful.

Sunderland are set to return to action on Friday evening, when they take on promotion-chasing rivals Fleetwood Town, in what is certain to be a tricky test for Phil Parkinson's side.

The Verdict:

This is a hugely frustrating update.

Gooch has shown that he's an excellent player to have available in the Sunderland squad, and he's certainly going to be difficult to replace in the team.

It's come at the worse time possible as well, with the hectic, and potentially season-defining festive schedule just around the corner.

The Stadium of Light faithful will be eager to see him return to action at the earliest of opportunities, as Sunderland look to make a timely return to the Championship this term.
