Sunderland have been dealt a frustrating injury blow ahead of the League One promotion run-in which is certainly going to be a closely-fought battle.

Sunderland boss, Jack Ross revealed in a post-match press conference (quotes sourced form the Sunderland Echo), that Bryan Oviedo picked up an injury in the draw with Peterborough United on Monday.

"It was his groin, a wee problem at half-time. "He aggravated it when he put the cross in in the lead up to the goal."

Oviedo picked up the injury after playing his part in Sunderland's goal against Peterborough, which resulted in Max Power scoring what they thought would be the winner.

But Posh equalised late into injury-time to see both sides earn a point, which is far from ideal for Jack Ross' side.

The result means that they are now behind Portsmouth in the league table, with Pompey having the chance to pip the Black Cats to promotion back into the Championship via the top two.

Sunderland take on Portsmouth this weekend, in a game which could ultimately decide which team wins promotion automatically this season.

But with Oviedo ruled out of action, Sunderland will have to find a way to cope without one of their key players for one of the biggest games of the season.

The Verdict:

This couldn't have come at a worse time.

Oviedo has been impressive when he has been in the Sunderland side and he'll leave a notable void in the starting XI this weekend if he isn't deemed fit enough to start.

They need him back as quickly as possible to help aid their promotion bid.
