Two of Sunderland's new summer signings returned to training on Thursday ahead of the Black Cats' weekend clash with Oxford United, Jack Ross has revealed.

Striker Charlie Wyke and centre-back Tom Flanagan are the players in question, after both arrived at the club with different injury concerns over the summer.

Wyke arrived from Bradford City for an undisclosed fee over the summer, but is yet to make his debut for his new club thanks to a shoulder injury sustained whilst still with the Bantams.

He may struggle to break into the XI straight away, however, with Josh Maja in brilliant form for Ross' side, scoring four goals in five games.

Sunderland have made an impressive start to life in League One, winning four out of their first five league games.

The Black Cats sit second only to Peterborough, having picked up 13 points from a possible 15 at this early stage of the season.

The Verdict

This is another big boost for the Black Cats.

They have been in great form anyway, but to have two of their most important summer signings returning to fitness is huge.

Wyke was signed with the intention of being Ross's main man this season, but will now prove to be competition for the sparkling Maja, rather than making the team straight away.

Thoughts, Sunderland fans?
