Sunderland today confirmed Chris Coleman as the club’s new manager it was met with approval by someone who knows that role very well.

Speaking to Goals on Sunday, Peter Reid back the former Wales manager as a wise choice from the current board, but was quick to point out just how big a task he faced in the North East.

I think Chris Coleman will be a good choice. He has got a hard job on and the fans are desperate for any sort of result. It is a massive football club and when times are going bad, is it a good time to go in? Hopefully they can only go one way and that is up.”

The Wearside outfit are bottom of the league and extended their run without a win at home to over an incredible eleven months on Saturday as they drew with Millwall. And, Reid warned that it is very challenging in England’s second tier.

It is certainly going to be difficult because the Championship, as we all know, is a tough, tough league.”

The Verdict

You can’t really argue with Peter Reid here, Chris Coleman is a great appointment but he has a very big task on his hands to keep the club away from trouble.

His work with Wales over the past six years has been incredible and it may surprise people that he has agreed to join Sunderland, but they do have big potential.

For now though, he has to focus on the short-term and that’s helping the club get out of the relegation zone, which will take a lot of work.
