Sunderland have had a tough decade and have had a fall from grace, as they suffered a double relegation from the Premier League to League One.

In the years prior to their first relegation, the Black Cats always were near the bottom, but several key managerial appointments solved the problem for the short-term, and steered Sunderland out of the mess.

Long-term, Sunderland were not a sustainable Premier League club, amid problems off the pitch meaning they could just not compete with the richer clubs in the division.

A lot of the financial issues came from miscalculated transfer windows, which saw them welcome talent from all around the world for astronomical money.

Noting the catalogue of managerial appointments in the last ten or so years, Sunderland granted money to the coaches to sign their players, only for them to depart shortly after.

Obviously, some of the signings were good and helped them achieve their objectives, but too many have been terrible.

Here, we recall some of the biggest flops of the last decade or so.

Do you agree, Sunderland fans, or can you remember some even worse signings? Let us know in the comments section below.

When it comes to transfer flops, it is hard to get any worse than Jack Rodwell.

The English midfielder was tipped to go on to have a top career when he was at Everton, but his move to Manchester City didn’t work due to injuries and competition for spots, and his move to Sunderland was even worse.

The money that the Black Cats spent on Rodwell during his time at the club is stupendous, and Sunderland fans will surely wince at the memory of him.

Steven Fletcher may have reached his level at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship now, but before this, he was a massive flop at Sunderland.

His time may be best remembered for when he tweeted a picture of his flashy new Lamborghini Aventador when Sunderland were wedged in a tight relegation scrap.

After scoring just a handful of goals in his stay, Fletcher departed for a weird move to Marseille.

The jury was out on Didier N’Dong until his last day at the club – he was obviously very talented, but for some reason he just couldn’t cut it at Sunderland.

The abilities were clear but N’Dong and Sunderland was a failed relationship and he has to go down as a flop.
