Sunderland could be handed a significant boost with regards to Luke O'Nien's future.

The 25-year-old is out of contract next summer, but according to Chronicle Live, the club have an option to extend his deal for a further 12 months.

O'Nien has established himself as one of the Black Cats' star players since joining the club, and is likely be key player for the club in their push for promotion during the rest of this season.

While the reported clause in his contract is yet to be activated, O'Nien all-but confirmed his intentions to stay at the Stadium Of Light, saying that he owes a lot to the North East club.

Asked if he's happy to stay at Sunderland, O'Nien told Chronicle Live: "100 per cent.

"I can’t thank enough the people who helped me to this stage, even the people who aren’t part of the club anymore.

"They’ve helped me to this day and I owe a lot of people credit for me being here because they’ve worked with me, they’ve been patient with me - the fans as well - and until whenever my contract runs out, I’ll make sure to that last day that I give my all for this club.

"The North East has welcomed me and my family, and on the football front it’s developed me as a player. I’m very proud to be a part of this great club.

"I know it’s not in the best part of its history, but I’ve loved playing for it. I’ve still got a lot of work to do because it’s nowhere near where I want to be and where the fans’ expectations want us to be. It’s hard not being where we want to be, but it’s enjoyable knowing we can work for it every day and that it’s well in our reach."

The verdict

Sunderland fans will be delighted at the prospect of keeping Luke O'Nien at the club.

The 25-year-old has been one of their most consistent performers since arriving at the club, with many suggesting that he is better suited to life in the Championship.

If O'Nien does stay in Wearside, the hope will surely be to build the team around him as they look to get things back on track.
