Sunderland have finally parted ways with Jack Rodwell, the club's official website has confirmed.

Rodwell will leave Sunderland by "mutual consent" at the end of June after an agreement was struck between the club and the player.

The 27-year-old ends his four year stay at the club, having made 76 appearances for Sunderland in that time.

Once tipped to become one of the best midfielders in the world, the former Everton and Manchester City man's stock has dropped dramatically since moving to The Stadium of Light and he played just three senior games last year.

His last outing for the Black Cats came in September, when he played in an EFL Cup loss against his former club Everton.

The thrice capped former England international reportedly earned about £70,000 per week and those wages were unfeasible to maintain in League One.

Rodwell could now move to the MLS after he becomes a free agent at the start of July while Sunderland have got his wages off their books.

The Verdict

The feeling among Sunderland fans will be a combination of relief and joy.

Rodwell has almost been a figurehead for the disastrous free-fall from the Premier League to the third tier.

And with his hefty wages, Rodwell's exit just cannot come soon enough for Sunderland fans.
