Jack Ross's Sunderland side came away with a much-needed win on Tuesday night, seeing off Gillingham 4-2 at the Stadium of Light, despite a shaky first half that saw them go in at the break with the score at 2-2.

But Will Grigg's penalty edged them back in front and Aiden McGeady's own spot-kick secured the three points in the second half, closing the gap on the top-two in the process.

They now sit just four points behind second-placed Barnsley with a game still in hand on the Tykes but the most important aspect of the game was arguably Grigg's goal, finally scoring in his fourth match for the club.

McGeady is the club's first-choice penalty taker and has been explaining his decision to give Grigg the chance to open his account with the first spot-kick of the night.

He says that he wanted the Northern Irishman to open his account for the good of the club with the goalscoring burden falling on his shoulders alone now.

But what should the fans make of McGeady's actions?

There are always certain murmurs when there is a debate over a penalty take with the usual verdict being that your first-choice should always take the penalty.

In this instance, however, I think they should have huge admiration for McGeady's actions.

It would have been easy for him to take the penalty himself but he saw that Grigg clearly needed a goal to boost his confidence and made a call that benefited the club.

If Grigg goes on to score 10-15 goals before the end of the season then we will look back on Tuesday night as a big moment in the season.
