There could finally be some good news for Sunderland fans after Duncan Watmore stepped us his recovery from a knee-injury.

The hard-working attacker managed to get through 70 minutes for the U-23 side and went off to a rousing reception according to the official site.

Ultimately, the Black Cats lost the game 2-1 but fans will just be glad to see the popular Watmore is nearing a return to the first team.

Saturday's defeat at home to Cardiff was their fourth in a row at the Stadium of Light this season. It also extend the side's winless run in front of their own fans, which now dates back to December 17, 2016.

That remarkably bad statistic needs to change soon for the Wearside club as Simon Grayson's men now find themselves in the bottom three of the Championship.

A returning Watmore would at least bring extra energy, commitment and determination to the side and he will no doubt have earmarked the game against QPR as a chance to get back in the team in just under three weeks time.

Meanwhile, Sunderland can perhaps take some comfort that their next two games are away from home against Ipswich and Preston, with the North East side desperate for a win.

The Verdict

Duncan Watmore returning to fitness is exactly the news Grayson needed. Of course, you can't expect a player to immediately change the fortunes of a poor side, but he will help.

His relentless style and love of the game has endeared him to fans and his personality on the pitch might rub off on others. It's unfair to Watmore and the fans that the club are relying on a 23-year old returning from nearly a year out injured, but that's the situation they are in.

The loyal fans deserve massive credit for still turning up in big numbers despite the shambolic home form.
