Sunderland are targeting a loan swoop for Manchester United youngster James Wilson, according to The Sunderland Echo.

Man United had high hopes for Wilson but he has failed to impress in his last few loan spells away from the club in the Championship and he could be set to drop down to League One.

The 22-year-old has played 20 games for Man United, scoring four goals in total.

He has had loan spells at Brighton, Derby County and Sheffield United but has only scored six goals in total during these three stints.

The former England under-21 international has suffered some injuries an is looking to get his career back on track.

Man United have made Wilson available for loan this summer and Sunderland have until August 31st to sign him to compete with Charlie Wyke, Jerome Sinclair, Josh Maja and Andrew Nelson up top.

The Verdict

With an attack of Wyke, Sinclair, Maja and Wilson, Sunderland are surely going to be among the top scorers in the division.

Wilson may not be ready for the top two divisions but he is still a promising talent and a move to League One could help his game.

I am not sure he'll ever make it as a Man United player but he could become a useful Championship striker in the future.
