Sunderland are considering a £2m bid for Burnley striker Jonathan Walters, according to the print edition of The Mirror via HITC Sport.

Walters will be allowed to leave Burnley after managing just 95 minutes of football following last summer's £3m switch from Stoke City.

And Sunderland are hoping to capture the 34-year-old, who has spent a number of years in the Premier League.

During his time in the Premier League, the 52-cap Republic of Ireland international has scored 43 goals and grabbed 19 assists in 233 outings.

His seven-year stint with Stoke was a hugely successful one for Walters as he established himself as a fine forward in the top flight.

Prior to that, Walters has represented the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Hull City, Wrexham, Chester City and Ipswich Town among others.

Burnley want £2m for Walters and this price tag has not put Sunderland off making a bid for the seasoned striker.

The Black Cats, under the guidance of Jack Ross, want to strengthen their attacking options ahead of their League One campaign and will be bankrolled by new owner Stewart Donald.

The Verdict

If Sunderland could pull this off, it would be a major marquee signing and he would surely fire them back to the Championship.

The veteran forward is strong, versatile and is a defender's nightmare - plus, he would score goals for fun at League One level.

Whether Walters would want to drop two divisions after so many years at the top level is a different consideration, though.
