Sunderland are running the eye over exciting young Middlesbrough striker Stephen Walker, as revealed by Keith Downie on the Roker Report.

The popular Black Cats' podcast broke the news via Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, as Jack Ross looks to cement his squad for the upcoming promotion campaign.

His side slipped to fifth in League One this weekend by virtue of not playing, but the promotion race has been blown wide open in recent weeks with any one of five team capable of challenging for the title.

With Josh Maja moving on this week, Ross is keen to add to his offering going forward. Walker in one of the most highly-rated young players in the country, having scored six goals in seven appearances for England's Under 19 side.

Walker smashed a hat trick against Macedonia in October, not long after making his senior debut for Boro in the EFL Cup against Notts County. The report suggests Boro want him out on loan for meaningful first team football, despite the attentions of Premier League clubs in acquiring his services.

The Verdict

He could be an inspired signing for Sunderland, even on a temporary basis. Walker is thought to have a strong future in the game, but he's best served by getting regular minutes under his belt at a competitive level.

A move to another club in the north east would be beneficial as he'd be close to home and suffer little upheaval. League One would offer a level he could thrive in and as Sunderland have proved this season, they'll play young players when the opportunity arises.
