Sunderland are hoping to seal a reunion for manager Jack Ross by signing fellow League One midfield ace Stevie Mallan from Barnsley.

The former St Mirren man made the move to Oakwell at the beginning of last term, but found life difficult in the Championship as Barnsley struggled and were ultimately, relegated from the Championship.

However, Sunderland, now with former St Mirren manager Jack Ross in charge, appear to be interested in making a move for Mallan, according to a report in the Chronicle.

Mallan could well now be open to a move back to his former manager at the Stadium of Light, as the Black Cats eye a squad overhaul to give them the best chance of an immediate return to the second tier following an absolutely miserable campaign last season.

The Scottish midfielder, who is still only 22, has got full honours for his country and is clearly rated by Ross, despite being sold on by the manager while in Scotland.

Sunderland are expecting a busy summer despite not making any signings of yet, and will be hopeful of raiding their closest rivals like Barnsley to tempt players to make the switch to the north east.
