Sunderland are targeting a second Rangers star following interest in Greg Docherty.

The 23-year-old has been widely linked with a move to Sunderland this month with reports from The Northern Echo claiming that a deal could be close.

The Black Cats are determined to strengthen their squad this month and are targeting a number of positions, with central midfield being one of the key areas for improvement.

Phil Parkinson discussed the prospect of signing Docherty this week and confirmed that talks are taking place.

As quoted by the Sunderland Echo, he said: "Greg is a player we’ve looked at, and we have had initial chats with Rangers.

“But there’s a number of those discussions going on, and the weekend is coming now so we’ll concentrate on that and reconvene after the game."

But alongside Docherty it's been claimed that the Black Cats are also looking at Jamie Murphy.

According to Football Insider, the club have registered an interest in the winger who is also thought to be available on loan.

Burton Albion had previously been favourites to complete the signing, but with Sunderland entering the race it remains to be seen where his future lies.
