Cameron Archer spent the second half of the season on loan at Preston North End from Aston Villa and had a great spell with the club as he scored seven goals in 20 Championship appearances.

Steven Gerrard will have to decide what to do with the 20-year-old ahead of next season but unsurprisingly, there is plenty of Championship interest in a loan deal for the player.

Watford, Middlesbrough and West Brom have all been credited with interest in the player while Preston will no doubt be keen to renew his time with the club.

Archer scored seven goals in 20 league games for North End during the second half of the 2021/22 season.

However, the latest club to be named is Sunderland according to Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse.

Sunderland gained promotion back to the Championship last season after beating Wycombe Wanders in the play-off final and therefore are wanting to recruit players who recruit this move up the leagues.

Furthermore, with interest surrounding Ross Stewart which might see him make a move away from the Stadium of Light this summer, the Black Cats may be in the market for a new forward at the club.

Collomosse claims that Archer is still likely to join Villa on their pre-season tour as this will give Gerrard a good opportunity to see him in action and make the decision of whether a loan is the best move for him or whether he wants to give him a try in the first team.

Therefore, any developments on the player's future may be set to come later in the transfer window.

The Verdict:

Cameron Archer impressed during his time with Preston this season so it comes as no surprise that a number of Championship clubs are interested in gaining his services for the new season.

It seems as though the staff at Villa are keen to weigh up his talent first and see where he's at before making a decision on his future next season.

However, this would suit Sunderland as it gives them the opportunity to also see what will be happening with Ross Stewart and evaluate how crucial this signing could be for their season.

That being said, there's still no guarantee that Sunderland would get him if they did want him this summer especially considering some of the other teams that are after him and may be competing at the top of the league.
