Sunderland are not looking to sign Greg Docherty on loan from Glasgow Rangers this summer despite reports suggesting they are keen.

New Sunderland manager Jack Ross has confirmed that there is no interest in Docherty, as reported by The Daily Record.

Sunderland had been strongly linked with the 21-year-old after it emerged that he would be made available for loan.

Docherty joined Rangers from Hamilton Academical last January but already looks set to be loaned out.

After playing over 100 games for Hamilton, the Scotland under-21 international added a handful of Rangers matches to his tally but it surplus to requirements this season.

But after watching his side thrash St Mirren 6-0 in a pre-season friendly, Ross ruled out any move for Docherty.

The PFA Scotland Manager of the Year said: "Greg is not a player we are interested in. That is not to say he is not a good player but we have other priorities.”

The Verdict

Docherty would have been a good addition for Sunderland on a short-term deal but it is not a position that desperately needs strengthening.

With Dylan McGeouch already signed up in central midfield, they have addressed that area of the pitch.

Ross will be keen on bringing in other targets instead of Docherty after ruling out a move for him.
