Robbie Stockdale will take charge of Sunderland's final game of the season, the club's official website has today confirmed.

Sunderland sacked Chris Coleman over the weekend following the Black Cats' 2-1 loss against Fulham and now they have confirmed that Stockdale will oversee the last game of this campaign.

The Black Cats are already relegated to League One with their fate being sealed the weekend before last with a crushing 2-1 defeat at home to Burton Albion, which kept their opponents' survival hopes alive.

Sunderland now sit six points adrift of second bottom and will finish the season at the foot of the Championship table.

While Sunderland search for a new manager for next season, Stockdale will take charge on a caretaker basis as his side prepare to take on champions Wolverhampton Wanderers at The Stadium of Light.

The 38-year-old will also oversee the preparations for the match this week and take the training sessions.

This is the third time that Stockdale has assumed the responsibility of caretaker manager, having been placed in interim charge when Dick Advocaat left the club in 2015 and then again in November 2017 when Simon Grayson was sacked.

Sunderland, meanwhile, continue to search for a new manager with Mick McCarthy among the names mentioned.

The Verdict

Stockdale is now taking the reins for the third time and the players will be familiar with his techniques. But Sunderland fans are sceptical about how good the coach really is. Stockdale has been with the club through all the recent failures and perhaps it is time for a shake-up, getting rid of him as well as they enter a new era.
