Billy Jones is close to leaving Sunderland, with the defender set to return to the Sky Bet Championship and sign a two-year deal with Rotherham United.

According to Andy Giddings from BBC Sheffield, newly-promoted Rotherham are closing in on the service of Jones, with the Millers finalising a medical for the Sunderland defender this afternoon.

Sunderland are facing a mass exodus this summer, with Jack Ross reshaping the playing squad at the Stadium of Light ahead of the club’s first year back in the third-tier of English football.

Jones has been at the Stadium of Light since 2014, making 96 appearances across all competitions for the Black Cats.

The 31-year-old made 22 appearances in the Championship last season, but was unable to prevent Sunderland suffering a second relegation in two years, with the defender part of the group of players to fall from the Premier League to League One.

Whilst Sunderland are facing life in League One, Rotherham are on their way back to the Championship, with the Millers set to offer Jones an instant return to the second-tier.

Paul Warne is looking to add to his Rotherham squad, as he aims to help his side establish themselves back in the Championship.

The Verdict

Jones has plenty of experience, which will help Rotherham on their way back into the Championship.

Of course, it’s been a disappointing couple of years for Jones at Sunderland, but he will be looking for better during his two-year stay with Rotherham.

Overall, this looks like a good move for all parties.
