Sunderland will be looking to kick on in the transfer window now as they aim to challenge at the sharp end of League One in 2018/19.

The Black Cats have had a tough couple of years but with Jack Ross in charge now and Stewart Donald owning the club, there is a sense of optimism - albeit a fairly slight one.

Even so, that's better than what has gone on at the club of late but it looks as though their chase for Ross County's Jason Naismith could prove harder than they'd like.

Indeed, as per the Press and Journal, the Dingwall side will only let the player go if he makes it clear that he wants to leave - chairman Roy MacGregor has confirmed.

As quoted by the outlet, he said:

“I need to check that out with Jason and understand exactly where he is in his thoughts.

“We have made it clear we want him but does he want the club?”

The Verdict

Naismith is a player Sunderland want but it looks as though he is going to have to force a move away from the recently relegated Scottish club.

Ross County's chairman MacGregor is clear in how he sees this one going - if it is to happen - and so we'll have to wait and see what Naismith decides.
