Sunderland could be set for a much-needed financial boost in the summer thanks to the form of Wahbi Khazri.

The 27-year old is currently playing in the French top-flight with Rennes and has made an impressive contribution to their season after joining on loan. Khazri has 11 goals and three assists to his name this season, with the side fifth in the table.

Therefore, the Chronicle Live has reported that L’Equipe claim several clubs are now monitoring the forward who could command a fee of around €15m.

However, the report does also note that Sunderland’s financial situation means that the Black Cats could be desperate to sell and could end up accepting a bid of around €4.5m.

Yet, one factor that could come into consideration and potentially benefit Sunderland is the upcoming World Cup in Russia.

Khazri is a Tunisian international, with his country drawn alongside Panama, Belgium and England in the finals.

A good tournament could see a bidding war begin for the Sunderland man who is set to leave in the summer regardless of whether Chris Coleman’s men survive.

The Verdict

Sunderland have very few players in their squad who will attract interest from elsewhere, so they will be determined to get all they can from Khazri.

Whilst his performances this season have done the Wearside outfit a favour, the reality is buying clubs will know Sunderland have to sell, so it will still take a lot to get a good fee.

Nevertheless, if he maintains this form and has a good World Cup, then it could hand the struggling Championship side an unlikely boost.
