Sunderland have tabled a fresh bid of £2m for Doncaster Rovers striker John Marquis, according to reliable journalist, Phil Cadden.

The assistant editor at The Sun revealed the news on his Twitter and it seems that Sunderland's search for a striker could be going down to the wire.

Marquis has been in excellent form for Doncaster this season and already has 16 goals to his name in League One, and it will come as no surprise to see Jack Ross eyeing a swoop for him.

Sunderland are in need of more depth in attacking areas after Josh Maja moved to Bordeaux earlier this month on a permanent deal.

It had previously been reported by Chronicle Live that Sunderland had made a bid for Marquis, but they were knocked back in their approach for the in-form forward.

It remains to be seen as to whether Doncaster will accept this latest offer for Marquis, but Sunderland will be hoping to complete a deal in the near future for a striker.

The Black Cats need to make swift movements in their transfer business with the deadline closing in just two hours time.

The Verdict

They've surely left it too late for this!

Sunderland should have had a replacement for Maja lined up earlier in the transfer window, and Marquis is the ideal replacement.

But with just two hours remaining in the transfer window, they are clutching at straws to try and secure a deal for the in-form Doncaster striker.
