Sunderland are considering making a move for former Newcastle United man David Edgar and have invited him to the UK for a trial.

The 31-year-old Canadian international, who can play across the back four or as a defensive midfielder, is available on a free transfer after his deal with Ottawa Fury expired.

Edgar had been playing for the Canadian side in the league below the MLS but he is on the search for a new club now.

And, HITC Sport have revealed that Jack Ross is keen on having a closer look at Edgar, who started his career in the north east with the Magpies.

He moved to the Black Cats bitter rivals as a teenager and worked his way through the ranks but only managed 23 appearances for the club in his years as a professional.

From there he moved to Burnley and also had spells with Birmingham and Sheffield United among others before moving back to Canada to play for Vancouver Whitecaps.

Ross will be looking to add to his squad to help Sunderland's promotion push, with the side currently second in League One ahead of tonight's massive game against Barnsley.

The Verdict

This would be a surprise move as Edgar hasn't played in English football for a few years now but it would make sense in a way.

His versatility can be very useful to Jack Ross and he also has experience that could be vital at important parts of the run-in.

Ultimately, Ross can assess Edgar in training and that provides him with a chance to consider whether he can impact the group positively and the manager should be backed if he wants to bring him in.
