Sunderland have handed a trial to free agent Anton Forrester, according to The Stoke Sentinel.

Forrester started for the Black Cats against Darlington in a pre-season friendly yesterday as new manager Jack Ross runs the rule over him and decides whether to sign him.

The 24-year-old was recently released by League Two side Port Vale after managing just three goals in 17 appearances for them last season.

Forrester's two year stint at Port Vale was marred by injuries and he scored five goals in 41 games for the Valiants.

The former Blackburn Rovers academy graduate is now hoping to steer clear of injuries and impress Sunderland during his trial spell.

Sunderland are set to lose Joel Asoro, who is nearing a £2m switch to Swansea City, and Forrester could be his replacement.

The striker played in the first-half of Sunderland's 1-0 loss against Darlington as he continues his trial with the League One side.

The Verdict

Sunderland have surely got to be aiming higher than this.

Forrester was recently released by Port Vale after suffering a string of injuries and failing to find his best form in front of goal.

Unless he does something special on trial, I cannot see Sunderland pressing ahead and signing him.
