Sky Bet League One side Sunderland have confirmed that winger Aiden McGeady has signed a new one-year contract extension, keeping him at the Stadium of Light until the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

The experienced wide-man was undoubtedly Sunderland's star-man last season, as the Black Cats narrowly missed out on promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.

The 33-year-old scored 14 goals and produced a further six assists for the Black Cats in all competitions, and was a key player for Jack Ross' side throughout the 2019/20 campaign.

His original contract with the Wearside club was set to expire next summer, which may have seen the winger potentially leave the Stadium of Light on a free transfer at the end of the season, had a new deal not been agreed.

But now, Sunderland have confirmed that McGeady has committed his future to the North East club, signing a new one-year contract extension which means that he is now signed up until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

This news will come as a massive relief for Sunderland fans, who will be urging their club to go one step further in their quest for a return to the second tier next season.

The Verdict

This is massive news for Sunderland - having McGeady sign a new deal effectively means that he will not be leaving this summer.

He proved last season that age is still a number, and he certainly lived up to expectations as he was, quite simply, a class above the rest in League One.

In my opinion, he is probably the most talented player to ever play in the division, and he could still do a job in the Championship for sure.

What a boost this is for the Black Cats ahead of the new season.
