Sunderland have announced that Donald Love has left the club ahead of the new League One season.

The defender struggled to make a notable impact for the Black Cats for much of last season, and was limited to just four league appearances for Jack Ross' side.

He will have been hugely frustrated to see his side miss out on promotion to the Championship in last year's campaign, after losing out in the play-off final to Charlton Athletic.

In total, Love made 39 appearances for Sunderland, and wasted no time in finding a new club, as it was confirmed that he reached an agreement to sign for Shrewsbury Town.

He'll be keen to show Jack Ross and the Sunderland supporters what they're missing out on, after a relatively quiet season at the Stadium of Light.

Love first signed for the Black Cats back in 2016 alongside former Manchester United defender, Paddy McNair, but failed to live up to the hype that was first set for him.

The full-back was out of contract at the end of next season, but the club evidently don't see him as part of their plans for next term, and it's a decision that has certainly been met with a positive reaction from the club's supporters.

Sunderland get their new league season underway against Oxford United, as they look to get off to the perfect start in their League One promotion bid.

The Verdict:

I think this is the right call from Sunderland to move him on.

Love only made a handful of appearances for Jack Ross' side last season, and the Sunderland boss evidently didn't rate him very highly.

So it's the correct decision to move him on at this stage, as the club have been needing to clear out the 'deadwood' for quite some time.
